It reported no violations in 2025, and its FAQ explains that occasional discoloration comes from naturally occurring iron and manganese, and a rotten-egg odor from hydrogen sulfide in the basalt aquifer.

Why does my Star water sometimes smell like rotten eggs?
Star Sewer & Water District says the odor comes from hydrogen sulfide formed from sulfate in the basalt aquifer, and discoloration from naturally occurring iron and manganese reacting with chlorine. Carbon filtration helps with odor; the right fix depends on your water.
Are private wells near Star affected by nitrate?
Idaho DEQ treats northeast Star as a nitrate priority area and offered free private-well sampling there in fall 2025. If you’re on a well, test it for nitrate and bacteria every year before choosing treatment.
What does the Complete system include?
