Treasure Valley water, in plain English
One valley. A lot of different water.
Nearly every community here runs on groundwater, and much of Boise also gets treated Boise River water. That’s why hardness, arsenic, nitrate and uranium vary from one city system, and one private well, to the next. We start with your water, then recommend only what it needs.
Groundwater
Over 95% of Idaho’s drinking water
Nitrate is the most common groundwater contaminant statewide.

Fewer than 2% of Ada County domestic wells are monitored for it; the study urges well owners to test.

Public systems aren’t required to monitor; known detections are tied mainly to military sites.

By city
Who supplies your water.
Ada County
Boise
Veolia Water Idaho
Most Boise homes get their water from Veolia Water Idaho, which blends about 70% well water with about 30% treated Boise River water. Its 2025 report lists hardness from 13 to 219 ppm (average 105), so what comes out of your tap depends on where you live and which sources are running.
Ada County
Eagle
City of Eagle Water Department · Veolia Water Idaho
Eagle has two main water providers, the City of Eagle Water Department and Veolia, and some homes are still on private wells. The city describes its well water as moderately hard, and its 2025 report shows uranium up to 22 ppb in the Eastern Zone, below the 30 ppb federal limit.
Canyon County
Nampa
City of Nampa
The City of Nampa supplies groundwater to about 100,200 people, and EPA records show no violations in the latest three-year window. EWG’s 2021–2023 averages for the system include arsenic at 4.74 ppb and nitrate at 2.22 ppm, both under federal limits but above EWG’s stricter health guidelines.
Ada County
Star
Star Sewer & Water District
Star Sewer & Water District draws from deep groundwater: a primary well about 700 feet down plus four wells deeper than 300 feet. It reported no violations in 2025, and its FAQ explains that occasional discoloration comes from naturally occurring iron and manganese, and a rotten-egg odor from hydrogen sulfide in the basalt aquifer.
Canyon County
Middleton
City of Middleton
The City of Middleton supplies groundwater from seven wells. Its 2023 report, the latest posted, shows nitrate at 1 ppm and no detected PFAS or disinfection byproducts, and EPA records show no violations in the latest three-year window.
Gem County
Emmett
City of Emmett Public Works
The City of Emmett supplies groundwater from three wells. Its 2025 report lists fluoride at 1.56 ppm, below the 4 ppm federal limit and the highest in our service area, and notes that its service line inventory includes some lead lines.
Elmore County
Mountain Home
City of Mountain Home Water Division
The City of Mountain Home supplies groundwater from nine wells, and the city reports hardness of 33–55 mg/L, which is soft. That means many homes don’t need a softener at all; the more common goals are chlorine taste and drinking water, where arsenic measured 4–7 ppb in the latest report (the federal limit is 10).
